Article - Baltic Countries

Sebastian Aguirre

Estonia has to decide to participate or not in the project of the nuclear power plant that will be build in Vasaginas, Lithuania.  The objective of Lithuania is to get independence from the suppliers and in that way to decrease the prices of the energy. The Prime Minister of Lithuania, Andrius Kubilius, pointed out that the Baltic Sea Region is developing nuclear power plants. Kubilius gave as an example Finland, who has two operating nuclear power plants and by 2014 they will build another one. Finland is also designing two more nuclear power plants.

The nuclear power plant is of 1300 megawatt. It will cost about $6.5 billion and will be build by 2020. The plan is that Lithuania pays 38%, Estonia 22%, Latvia 20%, and Hitachi Ltd., a Japanese reactor-builder 20%. Andrus Ansip, the Prime Minister of Estonia, said that Estonia would participate in the project if the price is acceptable. Estonia will get 300 MWh from the Vasagias nuclear plant.

In my opinion is a very good chance for all countries next to Lithuania to build this nuclear plant because they can have energy for a lower price. Countries like Latvia, Estonia and Poland would be benefit with the construction of the plant. The ways that these countries would be benefit are: lower prices, and that way the country will spend less money importing energy and can spend that money in the country. Also I think that Estonia should participate because is cheaper for them to contribute with other countries to build a nuclear plant than to spend the money in a single power plant only for Estonia. Estonia must take a difficult decision: To participate on the project, giving a lot of money, one billion euros. The other choice is not to participate in the project and to pay to another supplier, but the price would be greater.
