Blog 6: Stereotypes

Stereotypes on Senegal

A stereotype according to the Cambridge dictionary is an idea that is used to describe a particular type of person or thing”. In this entry I’m going to talk about the perception and stereotypes that people have of the country of Senegal. Before talking about the stereotypes in this country I would like to start by pointing the main characteristics of this amazing country.

Senegal is a country located on the west of the African country, Senegal is known as one of the hottest countries in the world, last year average temperature was 37º C.  Senegal is known all over the world because of their vast culture, specifically because of their celebrations. This country is also known because of the famous R&B singer Akon Thiam, better known as Akon.

Some of the stereotypes about this country are: people here is violent, drug dealers, modest, relaxed, creative, corrupt and that they have strange cults.
I think some of the stereotypes mentioned above are ridiculous and absurd, but others are correct, for example the one that says that Senegalese people is modest, is true because almost all the people that lives in this country is characterized by their modesty and kindness.

I think that stereotypes is something that people uses to catalogue people from other regions or countries, but sometimes this stereotypes can be ridiculous and offensive to the people that lives in that country. I also believe that sometimes we create stereotypes because we are ignorant and we don’t even try to know more about this country, so we conform to the things that other people say. In conclusion I think that stereotypes affects us a lot and sometimes they simply make us look like ignorant or as people without culture.
